Software Setup (OBS)

Configure your stream stack the right way from day one.

Last updated: March 2026

OBS is still the standard. Start simple: 4 scenes, stable bitrate, clean audio chain, and clear labels for every source.

Core Setup Checklist

  1. Install OBS Studio and update to latest
  2. Add scenes: Starting Soon, Main, BRB, Ending
  3. Set encoder and bitrate based on your GPU/upload
  4. Configure microphone filters (noise suppression/gate/compressor/limiter)
  5. Add alerts/chat/widgets carefully (avoid visual clutter)
  6. Record a local test and review VOD

Recommended Defaults

  • Encoder: NVENC H.264 (or AV1 if supported)
  • Bitrate: 6000 Kbps for 1080p60 on Twitch
  • Audio bitrate: 160 Kbps stereo
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds

Use the full tuning matrix in our OBS settings guide.

Common Software Mistakes

  • Too many browser sources (performance hit)
  • Wrong sample rate mismatch (audio drift)
  • No local recording backup
  • No hotkeys for scene transitions/mute

FAQ

OBS or Streamlabs?
OBS for reliability and control.

Should I stream 1080p60 immediately?
Only if your hardware and upload are stable; 720p60 is better than unstable 1080p60.
